d260838c4fd08b9cc07a7789093fWheel to Walk Canada got a big boost earlier this month, in the form of a $2,500 donation from TD Canada Trust. The funds will support Dr. Rathbone’s Neuroscience Research Fund at McMaster University.

“We are very grateful for the support we have received from TD Canada Trust,” said Jo-Ann Cino, chair of Wheel to Walk Canada. “This gift will fund local research focused on curing neurological diseases and disorders such as spinal cord injuries, stroke, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and diabetes.

“It is our organization’s goal that people all over the world who have suffered from chronic spinal cord injury will soon be able to rise up from their wheelchairs and walk again.”

Spinal cord injury affects over 41,000 Canadians, most under the age of 34, with 1,100 new injuries occurring each year. Wheel to Walk will continue to raise funds for spinal cord research through its 11th annual Golden Horseshoe Marathon, which kicks off on September 5. This year, the marathon is open to participants from the community who can walk, bike or run alongside the wheelchair athletes.

Through its donation, TD Canada Trust becomes a sponsor of the Golden Horseshoe Marathon, which continues to raise money for research. “We are proud to support Wheel to Walk Canada in the Golden Horseshoe Marathon,” said Chris Draper, Waterdown branch manager, TD Canada Trust.

“TD Canada Trust supports many charitable organizations and events at the local, provincial and national level with an emphasis on child health and safety and the Friends of Environment Foundation.

“We are especially proud to be involved with the Wheel to Walk organization as it gives hope to those who have had spinal cord injuries. We will be at the event on September 5 to cheer on the walkers, runners, cyclists and wheelchair athletes and TD Canada Trust will have a team competing in the wheelchair obstacle challenge.”

Information on registering for this year’s marathon or on sponsorships is available online at GoldenHorseshoeMarathon.org or by calling 1-888-929-3631.
