IT is Spinal Injuries Awareness Week. For Mackay’s Luke Simmons and his family, sending out the message of how a spinal cord injury can change a life forever is deeply personal.
Luke and his brother Scott were born five years and two months apart. They grew up camping, building bonfires and working as pastry chefs in their parents’ bakery.
Coincidentally, both their lives took a dramatic turn when they each reached the age of 23 and sustained spinal cord injuries – Scott, after a motorbike accident in 1998, and Luke, after falling into a pool at a party in 2003. Continue Reading »

Neuralstem, Inc. (NYSE Amex:CUR) announced that it has filed an Investigational New Drug (IND) application with the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to begin a Phase I safety clinical trial for chronic spinal cord injury with its spinal cord stem cells. This multicenter Phase I safety trial will enroll a total of 16 long-term, or chronic, spinal cord injury patients, with an American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) Grade A level of impairment, one-to-two years post-injury. Major accidents usually result in severe injuries sustained by one or more persons. Among these injuries, however, injuries to the spine is the worst to be suffered by those involved in the accident. LUCKNOW: Pace of life subdues with age. For 56-year-old Saroj things may be worse. She fell from her roof-top in Basti last week and turned quadraplegic (paralysis of all four limbs) after suffering an acute spinal cord injury. Post-primary treatment, she was referred to Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University’s (CSMMU) traumatic paraplegia unit.
Doctors were of the view that except for a miracle, Saroj’s life would be restricted to a wheelchair once she recovered. May be not now. She underwent a marathon surgery on Saturday. Six months of care, nursing and physiotherapy may make her walk with the help of a support. Continue Reading »
