rickyTwenty years ago, the kind of spinal-cord injury Caleb Brousseau sustained when he landed badly from a 12-metre jump while snowboarding in February would have left him in traction for months, contemplating a world of limited opportunity from a wheelchair.

These days, the 18-year-old Terrace high school student — who was made Paraplegic by the accident — is up and about, playing ball hockey with other spinal cord patients and feeling pretty good about what life has to offer.

“Right now,” he said, “not being able to walk is not a blessing, but it’s not a bad thing either. . . . I wouldn’t have the opportunities that I have right now if this [the accident] hadn’t happened.” Continue Reading »

ACTION ALERT: Stem Cell Bill Reintroduced – Tell Your Members of Congress to Cosponsor the Bill!

Good news — the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act was reintroduced in the House of Representatives on Friday, January 5. An identical bill is expected to be introduced in the Senate very soon. Congressional leadership has made this bill a top priority, with a vote in the full House of Representatives currently scheduled for Thursday, January 11. The House bill, H.R. 5, was introduced by Representative Diana DeGette (D-Co) and had 211 bi-partisan cosponsors at the time of introduction. Continue Reading »

Most people begin by telling some tragic story about paralysis. The tragic part often happens after the injury.
During high school, I had a teacher who had been injured in Viet Nam. He taught marketing, computer skills and much more about life. He was someone you could just sit around with and kick the bull. Very rarely did he talk about what he’d been through but you just knew it was a lot. When he did reflect back on those days it was kept very brief and it was something you respected. Shortly after my accident, he said to me, “right now is the easiest you’ll ever have it.” I had just received the biggest blow of my life and was loosing everything and everyone around me.
