On Mother’s Day 2005, 24-year-old Joey Lowe of Boise, Idaho was in Iraq, buttoned up in a tank. Lowe, a U.S. Marine corporal, was the gunner on the crew of an M1-A1 Abrams in the Battle of Al Qaim, code-named Operation Matador.

On the first day of Operation Matador, Corporal Lowe’s life changed forever. Fighting to keep insurgents from crossing a bridge spanning the Euphrates River on the Syrian border, his tank rolled over a 600-pound bomb buried in the soil. The charge was remotely detonated. Continue Reading »

Cast for broken bone gets paralyzed woman different treatment

I remember seeing a movie years ago about a girl who is paralyzed but pretends to have a broken leg while on a skiing vacation so she can enjoy a respite from how she ordinarily is treated by society.

The movie’s underlying premise was that people treated her differently when they thought her wheelchair was a temporary fixture in her life instead of a permanent one. It wasn’t a particularly good movie (as evidenced by the fact that both the title and lead actress’ name escape me) but I recently was reminded of it when I saw a friend of mine, Shauna Petrie, a paraplegic since she was 16. Robert Sullivan never seems to stop moving.

This surprises some because Sullivan has had to use a wheelchair since he injured his spinal cord in a motorcycle accident 17 years ago.

“When my customers first see me they ask where my helper is,” said Sullivan. His customers ask because they, too, are in wheelchairs. Sullivan repairs wheelchairs, scooters, lifts, ramps, steering devices and does handicap vehicle conversions.

“Pretty much I can make anyone mobile,” said Sullivan. “Some of my customers are elderly or have multiple sclerosis. I know how it is to rely on a wheelchair for mobility.” Continue Reading »

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Especially when it’s a discarded wheelchair.

Tens of thousands of disabled people in developing countries enjoy the dignity of moving about in rehabilitated wheelchairs, thanks to Joni Eareckson Tada.

The minister and disability-rights advocate has touched countless lives with her wheelchair project.

But she might never have had such an impact had it not been for one fateful summer day in 1967.

Just 17, she dived off a raft in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay and fractured her spinal cord, paralyzing herself from the neck down. Continue Reading »

Lives changed forever

Published: November 12, 2010 | Category: News

IT is Spinal Injuries Awareness Week. For Mackay’s Luke Simmons and his family, sending out the message of how a spinal cord injury can change a life forever is deeply personal.

Luke and his brother Scott were born five years and two months apart. They grew up camping, building bonfires and working as pastry chefs in their parents’ bakery.

Coincidentally, both their lives took a dramatic turn when they each reached the age of 23 and sustained spinal cord injuries – Scott, after a motorbike accident in 1998, and Luke, after falling into a pool at a party in 2003. Continue Reading »
