Paralysed from the chest down having broken her neck in a car accident at 16, Nathalie McGloin made her racing debut in 2015 and now competes alongside able bodied drivers in her specially adapted Porsche.

Meet Christopher Hills, a young man from Queensland who thought his body would always limit him.

Having Cerebral Palsy and being bound to a wheelchair as a quadriplegic, Hills now says it’s only his imagination that’s the limit thanks to incredible technology that allows him to professionally edit video by tapping his head.

In the United States alone, there are about 300,000 people living with spinal cord injury (SCI) and some 12,000 new SCI cases each year, most of them young adults, 80% of them men. The recovery of motor functions—walking, standing, and balance—after a SCI is slow and limited, can be highly variable, and can take months or even years. The cost of care for SCI patients is enormous—annually over $3 billion. Studies have shown, however, that activity-based interventions offer a promising approach, and Sunil Agrawal, professor of mechanical engineering and of rehabilitation and regenerative medicine at Columbia Engineering, is at the forefront of research efforts to improve recovery through the development of novel robotic devices and interfaces that help patients retrain their movements. Sam Schmidt to receive nation’s first license to drive semi-autonomous car

sam-schmidtSam Schmidt’s first victory as an Indy Racing League driver was at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 1999.

Paralyzed from the neck down since 2000, Schmidt is in line for a different type of victory at the speedway Wednesday, when he will become the first person in the nation to receive a restricted driver’s license for a semi-autonomous vehicle, according to the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles.

Using only the motions of his head, his breath and voice commands, Schmidt will demonstrate his new driving abilities with a 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 that was modified by Arrow Electronics. Continue Reading »

Human Neuron Transplants Treat Spinal Cord Injury in Mice

Now a UC San Francisco team has transplanted immature human neurons into mice with spinal cord injuries, and shown that the cells successfully wire up with the damaged spinal cord to improve bladder control and reduce pain. This is a key step towards developing cell therapies for spinal cord injury in humans, say the researchers, who are currently working to develop the technique for future clinical trials. Graphene Nanoribbons May Help Heal Damaged Spinal Cords
